چکیده
We thank the patients who took part in the RECORD study, without whose help this study would not have been possible. The MRC funded the central organisation of RECORD, and Shire Pharmaceuticals funded the drugs, which were cofunded and manufactured by Nycomed. However, the trial was conducted, analysed and reported independently of all funders. The Health Services Research Unit is core funded by the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health Directorates. The views expressed here are those of the authors. Alison Avenell is funded by a Career Scientist Award from the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health Directorates.

Iron deficiency is known to cause symptoms such as fatigue, depression and restless legs syndrome resulting in impaired quality of life and working capacity. We sought to examine the iron status of reportedly healthy individuals by a framed study design in 58 highly educated Swiss hospital employees and to compare the use of non invasive tests for assessing iron deficiency (ID). A structured in...
متن کاملValue of Serum Transferrin Receptor Levels in Assessing Iron Status in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: It is difficult to assess iron status in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Currently available tests including serum ferritin and transferrin saturation have limitations in differentiating Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) from Anaemia of Chronic Disease (ACD). Serum soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) level has been proposed as a po...

Anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) is a frequent complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A diagnostic difficulty in RA is the distinction between iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and ACD. The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of serum soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) and sTfR/log ferritin (TfR-F) index to diagnose iron deficiency in RA patients with anaemia. Routine laboratory in...
متن کاملThe iron status of a healthy South African adult population.
INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, can present with or without haematological changes and is a major cause of microcytic anaemia. In South Africa and Africa in general, there is a paucity of studies on the iron status of healthy adult non pregnant females and males >18years of age. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of iron def...
